The Tormalet
Today Mark, Alex and I conquered the Col du Tormalet! We set off about ten miles from the base and it was a climb all the way to the top.
It may be an average of 7.5% but the lower slopes take the bulk of this. After the first 4k it just kept getting steeper and steeper. Normally I relish a tough climb but this was tough. The heat was relentless and my heart rate barely dropped below 165bpm.
The road hides itself as it winds up the mountain, gradually revealling more of the stunning view. The higher slopes were stunning, bar some resurfacing work leading to tarmac on the tyres. I made myself turn to look at the views, after a few switch backs I saw the valley below with its lake sparcling.
There were lots of riders attempting the climb and occasionally I would have a chat. There was also some good support from members of the public, perhaps locals who understand how tough a challenge it is. As I crested the Col a lady clapped and cheered bravo!
Alex came up next and told me that Mark was following after his tyre blew in the heat. I rode down a bit and rode the last part with him. Neither of us could belive we were actually here after all the talk and training.
After enjoying an ice cream and chatting to fellow cyclists we stated the descent. It was fast and scarry. The clound had rolled in and visability was low. Really glad I took my wind stopper.
All in all a real eye opener but much happier now I know what’s in store for us. The Etape had got a lot harder in my mind though.
Off for an easy ride tomorrow before taking on Hautacam on Saturday.
