Acclimatisation training

An Ironman is three separate events but in Nice there is going to be a fourth challenge – Heat. Acclimatisation training is a vital part of the build up to the event but not easy to do in mild England temperatures.

The heat has taken it’s time getting to Britain this year and the first few training sessions on hot days had a noticeable effect on physical and mental performance. In the month building up to the Ironman I plan use acclimatisation techniques as part of my training. So far I’ve endured turbo training in a hot room and bought a sweat suit to run in. The latter is particularly unpleasant at it’s not only hot but I look like a reject from the 80′s.

I’ll continue with these techniques as well as making time for regular saunas and hot baths. IF anyone has any further tips I’d love to know.

    Hi Rob,

Hope that the training is going well.
Indeed the old fashioned ‘sweat suit’ like Rocky used to wear in the old Rocky films is ideal. In fact, the more heavier clothing you can wear while training will be of a benefit psychologically because when you go to lighter weight clothing (for the event) , you will feel faster !! Also, the more layers you can put on, the more you will sweat. Of course, if you wanted to get really hot, try running in a down jacket and down trousers (or primaloft)………………..but down is hottest !!

    Good luck !!

    Cheers – Quentin :)

I’ve not justified the expense of a down jacket yet and the thought of running in one is quite intimidating!

Where has your European adventure led you to lately?

I appreciate any and all serious feedback, especially if you feel strongly about something I have written about.
